This interdisciplinary major offers exciting career possibilities, both in government and private industry, at home and abroad. Languages and cultural understanding are essentialÌý in business, engineering, commerce, civil service, law, library science, media, science, economics, health and social sciences.

The degree emphasizes knowledge and awareness of the cultural environment in which professions are practiced in the Spanish-speaking world. Students develop an advanced level of language proficiency and transcultural competence in addition to taking coursesÌý in a professional field of their choice.

Our Spanish for the Professions major consists of 32 credits in Spanish + 12 credits outside the Spanish Department (which can be fulfilled by 12 credits from a certificate, minor, second major or second degree). Within the 32 credits in Spanish, you need to complete the following courses:

  • Ìý3 of the following courses: SPAN 3030, SPAN 3060, SPAN 3070, SPAN 3080

  • ÌýSPAN 4060

  • ÌýSPAN 4070

  • ÌýSPAN 3010 or SPAN 3120

  • ÌýSPAN 3100

  • Ìý3 more SPAN credits at the 3000 level

  • Ìý3 more SPAN credits at the 4000 level

Since you have already completed 20 credits to become a Spanish minor, you may need only 4 additional SPAN courses to become a Spanish for the Professions Major (+ 12 non-SPAN electives), depending on how many major requirements you already have as part of your minor.
