Doctoral studentsĚýsubmit two distinct kinds of research papers, both of whichĚýare judged as passing or failing by a committee: theĚýpreliminary paperĚý(submitted in the third semester of study)Ěýand theĚýsynthesis paper (submitted by the end of the sixth semester of study). The synthesis paper is the first stage of the two-stageĚýcomprehensive exam, which also requires a defense of the thesis proposal. Once the comprehensive exam is passed, the student is advanced to candidacy for the doctoral degree.
