Radio Telescope Investigation/Optimization or GPS/GNSS monitor station

Description: There are two possible paths for this project. One is a Radio Telescope Investigation/Optimization where the following may be accomplished:

  • Antenna design - L/S/X band antenna feed components
  • Meridian drift scan - design, develop and field a radiometer or spectrometer in meridian drift scan mode to enable sky surveys at different wavelengths
  • Remote control of the 60' dish mount - feasibility study and recommendation for remote control including a proof-of-concept demonstration

The second is a Scientific GPS/GNSS Monitor Station where the following may be accomplished:

  • Current GPS/GNSS monitor stations cost many thousands of dollars yet the latest low- cost (~$100 USD) GPS/GNSS receiver provide measurements across multiple satellite navigation constellations and multiple frequencies.
  • The incorporation of such sensors would great expand the data available to GUARDIAN
  • Objective will be to assess the potential sensors (including the Android mobile phone platform) for quality of the scientific data.Ìý Develop a low-cost node (GPS/GNSS receiver, processing component, communication element) which could be deployed widely to significantly expand data collection capabilities.
