The lecture, "Ways of Knowing the Body in Buddhist Tantra and Tibetan Medicine," took place at 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 17 in Hale 270.</p><p>Ways of Knowing the Body in Buddhist Tantra and Tibetan Medicine Janet Gyatso, Harvard University.</p><p>Thursday, October 17 at 6 p.m. | Hale 270, CU Boulder campus.</p><p>Traditional Tibetan medicine sometimes found its Buddhist heritage and its urge for empirical knowledge of the body to be at odds, and made unusual efforts to separate itself from religious ways of knowing. At the same time, the line between yogic and sensory observation was not easy to draw. This lecture will explore how the body became the focus of some of the most interesting theoretical reflection, from the dawn of Tibetan Buddhism into the time of the height of the central Tibetan government's powers in the 17th century.</p><p>Janet Gyatso is the Hershey Professor of Buddhist Studies at Harvard University. She is a leading voice in the field of Buddhist Studies as the author of a pioneering work on Tibetan autobiography,&nbsp;<em>Apparitions of the Self:</em>&nbsp;<em>The Secret Autobiographies of a Tibetan Visionary</em>&nbsp;(1998), and editor of several important anthologies,&nbsp;<em>Women of Tibet,</em>&nbsp;co-edited with Hanna Havnevik (2005) and<em>&nbsp;In the Mirror of Memory: Reflections on Mindfulness and Remembrance in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism</em>&nbsp;(1992). Over her long and distinguished careers, Janet Gyatso has been a pioneering voice in several areas in the study of Tibetan Buddhism: revelation, gender, tantra, monasticism, medical conceptions of the body, and questions of modernity. Her lecture addresses themes of her forthcoming book, titled:&nbsp;<em>The Way of Humans in a Buddhist World: An Intellectual History of Medicine in Early Modern Tibet.</em></p><p>There will be a light reception starting at 5:30pm. She co-edited with Virginia Burrus the first volume of the transdisciplinary Theological Colloquia, Toward a Theology of Eros: Transfiguring Passion at the Limits of Discipline (2007), and co-edited with Laurel Kearns Ecospirit: Religions and Philosophies for the Earth (2007). Her previous books include The Face of the Deep: A Theology of Becoming (2003) and On the Mystery: Discerning Divinity in Process (2008). This was part of a conference titled, "Translating Buddhist Luminaries: A Conference on Ecumenism and Tibetan Translation."</p><p>In nineteenth-century Tibet, a famed circle of Buddhist luminaries worked tirelessly to collect and compile a wide range of teachings in order to preserve Tibet's diverse practice traditions and unique tantric heritage. Who were these personalities? How has their approach and legacy impacted Tibetan Buddhism as it has grown and taken root beyond the Tibetan plateau? How should we understand the ongoing significance of their work?</p><p>Keynote speaker Ringu Tulku is one of the world's experts on ecumenism in Tibet. This event brings together 2 prominent scholars &nbsp;to talk about the history of religion and gaming, games as religious&nbsp;practice, and how today’s game technologies might intersect with new&nbsp;understandings of religion and spirituality. &nbsp;</p><p>Speakers:</p><p>Jason Anthony: Senior editor at Time Inc., speaker, and game designer who works at the intersection of games and ritual. His work has appeared in The Washington Post, Christian Century, the Boston Review, and The Record. Most of Anthony’s games take religious rituals as a starting point. Shabbat-put was a mashup of Jewish Sabbath rituals and Olympic events. In The Cards was a fully-gamed chapel service, commissioned by a seminary, based on the rules of blackjack. Sacrifice Play was a reinvention of the Aztec ball games, complete with human sacrifices. The Ten Year Game is a belief-agnostic, fully-gamed religion that takes ten years to play.</p><p>Rachel Wagner: Associate Professor of Religion in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Ithaca College. Rachel’s work centers on the study of religion and culture, including especially religion and film and religion and virtual reality. Her book, Godwired: Religion, Ritual and Virtual Reality (Routledge, 2012) explores how our fascination with all things virtual reveals our desire for new rituals and new modes of world building.
