William Elliot Griffis authored a variety of texts, including guidebooks, books on religion and history, and collections of folklore from around the globe. He lived in Japan from 1870-1874 in Echizen Province as a Superintendent of Education and returned briefly from 1926-1927 to receive his second decoration by the Japanese Emperor.
