In a in Nano Letters, Lauren Pellows et al. use microscale thermophoresis (MST) to show that the electrostatic binding interaction between nitrogenase MoFe protein and CdS quantum dots capped with negatively-charged mercaptoprionate ligands is similar in strength to the interaction between MoFe and its physiological redox partner ferredoxin. In addition, they show that this interaction is stronger with smaller quantum dots. This work demonstrates both that such biohybrid systems can approximate in situ binding interactions and that these interactions can be characterized directly and quantitatively.
