Sierra is working with biological soil crusts, which are diverse communities of cyanobacteria, lichen, moss, and bacteria. Her work includes characterizing the chemical and genetic makeup of biocrust communities that are cultivated for restoration and the resulting ecosystem service outcomes for improving degraded sites.听Sierra was part of the 2018听Interdisciplinary Quantitative Biology (IQ Biology) Program through听BioFrontiers at CU.听
