Donna Caccamise, Associate Director and faculty at ICS, Bill Penuel and Joseph Polman, Affiliate Faculty with ICS presented their research and attended the London Festival of Learning June 22nd to the 30th at the University College London’s UCL Institute of Education.

Donna presented on "Translating Theory to Practice: Technology Solutions to Solve Practical Issues for Teaching Reading Comprehension at the Secondary Level".

Bill presented on "Mapping Networks to Help Education Gain Insights into Complex Educational Systems", "The Challenge of Assessing 'Knowledge in Use': Examples From Three-dimensional Science Learning and Instruction" and "Networked by Design: Interventions for Teachers to Develop Social Capital".

Joseph presented on "Life-long Life-wide Learning within and Beyond the Disciplines", "From Quantified Self to Building a More Fit Community: Data Tracking and Science Infographics as Boundary Objects", "Learning Scientific Practices Through Participation as a Volunteer Community Scientis" and "Community Science Identity: Becoming Community Scientists in a Museum-based Genetics of Taste Program".

Samuel Severance, a former graduate student at ICS presented on "Examining Primary Teacher Expertise and Agency in the Collaborative Design of Project-Based Learning Innovations".

For the first year the Festival brought the International Conference on the Learning Sciences (ICLS), Learning @ Scale (L@S), and Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) conferences together under one event. Global experts in technical innovation in education, learning sciences, and artificial intelligence came together and engaged researchers, educators and businesses.

The 20th Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) International Conference on Multimodal Interaction will be held in Boulder, Colorado, USA. October 16-20th, 2018.

The 20th International Conference on Multimodal Interaction (ICMI 2018) will be held in Boulder, Colorado. ICMI is the premier international forum for multidisciplinary research on multimodal human-human and human-computer interaction, interfaces, and system development. The conference focuses on theoretical and empirical foundations, component technologies, and combined multimodal processing techniques that define the field of multimodal interaction analysis, interface design, and system development.

The University of Colorado Boulder's Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS) is a Gold sponsor of this conference, which will be held at the historic Boulderado Hotel.
Professor Sidney D'Mello from ICS is a General Chair for the conference organizing committee.

ICMI 2018 will feature a single-track main conference which includes: keynote speakers, technical full and short papers (including oral and poster presentations), demonstrations, exhibits and doctoral spotlight papers. The conference will also feature workshops and grand challenges. The proceedings of ICMI 2018 will be published by ACM as part of their series of International Conference Proceedings and Digital Library.

The conference features world-renowned keynote speakers, strictly-reviewed papers for presentation, demonstrations/exhibits, workshops/tutorials, special sessions, grand challenges, and a doctoral consortium. ICMI is keen to showcase novel input and output modalities and interactions to the ICMI community.

The conference attracts researchers in relevant areas of computing science (e.g., AI, machine learning, sensors, cognitive computing) and representatives from innovative companies at the forefront of technological development from around the world. Delegate numbers of around 200 people from a host of countries are typical.

Online registration for the conference will begin the week of July 23. The link will be posted on the ICMI 2018 website homepage.

The University of Colorado Boulder's Institute of Cognitive Science is a Platinum sponsor of this conference, which will be held at the historic Boulderado Hotel.

Conference papers are being solicited from behavioral and social sciences. These papers allow ICMI to understand how technology can be used to increase the scientific knowledge and may focus less on presenting technical or algorithmic novelty.

The deadline to submit long and short papers is May 1, 2018.

During March 12 to 16, seven events occurred for the community inside and outside of the University to learn about the progress and benefits of brain research.
Three speakers, three workshops, and a Community Brain Day Open House provided 'food for thought' attendees young and old.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the 2019 International Brain Awareness Week which is March 11 - 17, 2019. CU Boulder will once again offer Brain Week around this time.

“The Impact of Exercise on the Aging Brain” by Dr. Angela Bryan

Dr. Bryan will give an overview of age-related changes in the brain, and the mechanisms by which lifestyle choices and genetics may influence brain structure and function during later years of life. She will present preliminary findings from her study of physical activity with older adults.

Professor Marie Banich really does know how teens think. Her work at CU Boulder's Banich Lab uses brain imaging techniques to understand the neural systems that process emotion, social information and rewards. The research illuminates the science behind “crazy” teen behavior, but also the wonderful opportunities of youth.

Given the increasing prevalence of marijuana recreational and medicinal and changing legal policies, understanding the effects of different forms of cannabis on human brain development and health is an increasingly important topic. Dr. Cinnamon Bidwell will provide an overview of the current state of human cannabis research, important barriers to conducting cannabis research due to federal regulations, and a path forward for collecting data on the health risks as well as potential therapeutic effects of legal market cannabis products.

This drop-in group is an opportunity to be led through a powerful guided meditation to undo stress, soothe the nervous system and feel better. Students, staff and faculty are welcome to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring materials for personal comfort that will aid meditation (e.g., yoga mat, a small pillow or cushion, etc.). Please arrive on time so the meditation is not disturbed. There will be no late admittance.

Get to know your brain and how it works at this open house event with demonstrations, hands on activities, and fascinating research-based information. Come learn about what is happening in the fields of psychology, cognitive science, neuroscience research at CU Boulder and beyond. Join us for a stimulating, fun, and brain expanding event for curious people ages 5 to 105!

A sampling of activities: challenge your balance, experience psychophysiological sensations; see brain pattern animations; check out a mock brain-scanner; learn about children and delayed gratification; make mindfulness jars; see how gaze tracking, facial expression tracking and skin response sensors work; how falling in love happens in the brain; play brain games and more. Nearly 20 activities are expected to explore the brain.
