Dear ENVS Alumni,

I hope this finds each of you doing well. During a beautiful Fall season here at the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder) (that you likely remember from your time here) we have continued to advance our work in Environmental Studies (ENVS). Our latest newsletter – the third edition after a hiatus – outlines selected research, teaching and engagement activities that illustrate our work on human-environment challenges together.

Among our developments since our April 2021 update, I’m happy to share these highlights:

  • 156 undergraduates, 26 professional Master’s students, three research M.S. students and three 3 Ph.D. students graduated in ENVS in May 2021; the ENVS graduation featured a commencement address by , Director of Climate Policy at the Roosevelt Institute
  • We launched an Outdoor Recreation Economy (ORE) program with opportunities for a professional Master’s degree (residential and online), graduate certificates and other professional development
  • Among several awards for ENVS students, staff and faculty
    • Ph.D. student Alex Standen won a prestigious fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies and Mellon Foundation
    • Renae Marshall was chosen as the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Undergraduate for Spring 2021
    • Assistant Professor Cassandra Brooks earned an Association for Environmental Sciences & Studies (AESS) Early Career Award
    • Assistant Professor Karen Bailey was appointed to the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission by Governor Jared Polis for a 4-year term that began in July
  • Six new ENVS faculty members joined our unit:
    • Environmental & Natural Resources Policy Teaching Associate Professor Autumn Bernhardt
    • Outdoor Industry & Business Leadership Teaching Associate Professor Mark Gasta
    • Assistant Professor Zia Mehrabi, working on food security, climate change, biodiversity, human health, welfare, infrastructure and technology
    • Economic Development Teaching Associate Professor Natalie Ooi
    • Renewable & Sustainable Energy Teaching Assistant ProfessorJosh Radoff
    • Sustainable Food Systems Teaching Assistant Professor Damien Thompson
  • Lastly, the Board of ´ºË®ÌÃÊÓƵ approved the change in status for the program to become the Department of Environmental Studies effective November 4, 2021.

In these ways and in others, we are building capacity as we seek to more capably train future leaders, scholars and practitioners to address 21st century challenges at the human-environment interface here in ENVS.

Also, we continue to work to better connect with you as ENVS Alumni. If you’re not yet in touch but want to learn more about our ongoing work, send us an email at ENVStudies@colorado.edu to start a conversation. You can also email me directly at boykoff@colorado.edu.
