Schools that HealClaire Latané, professor of landscape architecture at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona and author of “Schools that Heal: Design with Mental Health in Mind,” will share her work as the second speaker in the Environmental Design Lecture Series this fall. The lecture is sponsored by the City of Boulder’s Department of Open Space and Mountain Parks.

Applying extensive research that demonstrates time in nature can support mental health, Dr. Latané will show how school design and programming can weave nature and community across school spaces.

Additionally, in coordination by Louise Chawla, Professor Emerita in ENVD, Dr. Latané will support the Green Schoolyards: Designing for Mental Health landscape architecture studio led by Teaching Associate Professor Emily Greenwood and Lecturer Jade Orr this semester. Students will again take on the opportunities and challenges of designing schoolyards for the Boulder community, this time with a priority on considering designing outdoor spaces as mental health supporting places.
