Global engagement plays an important role in enhancing the educational and research missions of programs and departments across the college. It includes educational experiences for undergraduate students, such as study abroad and international internships, and for our graduate students, such as dual PhD degree programs. Formal and informal collaborations are of critical importance for most research programs. Supporting international students and visiting researchers is another aspect of global engagement.

To facilitate global engagement, campus provides various forms of support, like the Ìý²¹²Ô»åÌýGlobal Engagement office. In addition, the college has provided services through its own program for global engagement, formerly run by Andrew Wingfield. The college would like to re-envision its approach to global engagement.

This message is a call for volunteers (faculty and staff) to participate in a working group on global engagement in the College of Engineering and Applied Science. The objective of the working group is to develop ideas on how the college can enhance global engagement in education and research and better coordinate its activities with departments, programs and campus. We are interested in faculty and staff representing a diverse set of perspectives and experiences.

The working group is charged to prepare a report with ideas and recommendations by Sept. 1. Therefore, volunteers should be available to conduct their work throughout this summer. The working group is expected to meet twice a month, starting in May. Volunteers are expected to participate in these meetings as their travel and vacation schedules permit. Between meetings, group members will study ideas independently or in subgroups, with an average workload of one hour per week.

If you would like to participate, please  no later than April 26. I will be leading this working group and will be in touch thereafter. Please email me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Kurt Maute
Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education
