Civil Systems

Emma is a PhD student at the University of Colorado Boulder studying Civil Engineering with a focus in Civil Systems. Emma鈥檚 interest in studying the complexity of sustainable development was fueled by being a part of Engineers Without Borders in her undergrad, working on a few income expansion projects in Kumponda, Malawi and leading administratively as Vice President her final year. Emma was able to pursue learning Urdu as a Critical Language Scholarship recipient in 2018 after pursuing delicious food in 2017 by studying abroad in Ghana for a semester. She has also interned for the Irrigation Training and Research Center, mapping the salt accumulation across a Californian irrigation district. By pursuing a PhD at CU Boulder, Emma intends to learn the necessary skills to research various complexities of rural development, including how to objectively and ethically work in this field.
