This year's lecture features Dr. Carolyn Dinshaw (NYU). 听Carolyn Dinshaw is one of the most influential writers and thinkers in cultural studies today. Author of groundbreaking works on Chaucer's poetry,听Chaucer's Sexual Poetics听(1989), and medieval literature, Getting Medieval: Sexualities and Communities, Pre- and Postmodern听(1999) and听How Soon is Now? Medieval Textx, Amateur Readers, and the Queerness of Time听(2012), Dinshaw has been a leader in opening up what was an extremely traditional field- medieval English literature- to new, theoretical approaches such a feminist and queer theory.听

33 people collectively attended Dinshaw's听talk and the graduate seminar.听On Thursday, March 16, 2017, Prof. Dinshaw gave a talk on mirages and on Friday, March 17, 2017听Dinshaw ran a seminar for graduate students on the case of John/Eleanor Rykener, that late fourteenth-century sex worker caught in the act in London, turning tricks in a dress.听This visit provided an opportunity for graduate students to learn about new directions in literary study and to reflect on the kinds of work that they might want to take. Additionally, the visit encouraged a very productive discussion about graduate education and undergraduate enrollments for myself and other faculty.
