Milio’s journey has been an interesting one because he never thought he would go to college. His parents both held an elementary school education (are some of the smartest and most hard-working people he knows) and they immigrated from Mexico in hopes of having a better future for their children. He always knew he wanted to help people but did not know what he wanted to do. After graduating from high school, a teacher (shout out to Skelly) encouraged him to check out his local community college (Mt. San Antonio College) and Milio gave it a shot. In his courses, he enjoyed taking general education courses that challenged his way of thinking and being. Additionally, he learned about the challenges that folks of his background face, including low-income communities and the people of color, which motivated him to continue his education. He learned the importance of resources and learned how to navigate the college system through the help of so many amazing people.

Eventually, he transferred to Cal Poly Pomona and became the first person in his family to obtain a bachelor’s degree in psychology. His friends, professors, and the staff encouraged him to keep going and he got his Master of Science degree in Psychology! It was in Milio’s final year of graduate school doing an internship as a Career Counselor Graduate Intern internship (and 8 years of job exploration!) that he realized that higher education was the right field for him. He is ever grateful to all the wonderful friends, mentors, staff, and faculty who believed in him and helped him make it this far and all the amazing new folks here at CU who continue to be by his side.

Throughout his time in Higher Education, Milio has worked various positions and worked alongside many multicultural populations including first generation, low-income, people of color, undocumented folks, veterans, transfer students, LGBTQI+, differently abled, and non-traditional students to name a few. Working with different folks has helped him develop his advising skills in finding different ways to how best assist and work alongside others with their aspirations.

He began working at CU Boulder in December 2020 and has held various other roles. He began as a Departmental Advisor for atmospheric sciences, biochemistry, and chemistry, then a Training and Professional Development Coordinator welcoming new advisors to campus, previously a Pre-Health Advisor, and now is excited to be welcoming and working alongside new Buffs as a First Year Advisor!

Milio enjoys learning about our universe, hearing the stories of others, nature walking/hiking, loves doggos, going to concerts, trying new foods, and is always ready for life’s next adventure
