Carla Jones (Cultural Anthropolgy, Professor)

Professor Carla Jones' research studies class, gender, and consumption in urban Indonesia, the world’s largest majority-Muslim country. She has written extensively on the new middle classes and the rise of religious lifestyles in two cities: Jakarta and Yogyakarta. As a leading scholar of modest fashion, she was a member of the curatorial team for the Contemporary Muslim Fashions exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, 2018-21. She appreciates how her friends in Indonesia think about taste and loves analyzing how and why style matters.

Sarah Simenoff (PhD Archaeology in Progress)

Sarah Simeonoff is a PhD student in the archaeology track at CU. One of Sarah's primary areas of research interest is in bridging the divide between archaeological fieldwork and collections and indigenous communities. Through her PhD work, Sarah hopes to share the invaluable cultural information and archaeology of Alaska’s Sugpiat (Alutiiq) people with not just tribal members but the broader public. In this way, her research has become a deeply personal and meaningful avenue towards exploring her own cultural heritage as a Sugpiat. Sarah's interests are rooted in a desire to preserve cultural resources for the future. As she continues in her career, she hopes to involve Native people in all processes of archaeology (commercial, academic, avocational and museum) to make certain indigenous voices are always heard in archaeology and museums.

Sanjana Vookanti (BA Anthropology in Progress)

Hello! My name is Sanjana and I am a senior at CU! Beginning spring of 2023, I had the incredible opportunity to work with Arielle Milkman and Dr. Kathryn Goldfarb to explore smoke impacts on firefighters and wildfire communities. Throughout my time on this team, I was able to have interesting discussions regarding the accessibility of research and ways to present research findings to the public. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to have these kinds of conversations!

Michaela Howells (PhD Anthropology 2013)

Dr. Howells is a biological anthropologist and human biologist specializing in the influence of culture on health outcomes and associated biological adaptations. She is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Her current work focuses on the impact of natural disasters and climate change on maternal and child health. Her research interests include social determinants of health, One Health, stigma, reproductive justice, and health equity and aims to identify barriers to health care surrounding race, natural disasters, place-based violence, civil status, prenatal care, menstrual equity, and HIV/AIDS. She is the Director of the UNCW GAPS (Growth Adaptation Pregnancy Stress) Lab and has conducted collaborative research in the South Pacific, Southeastern Asia, East and West Africa, Central and South America, and the American Southeast.
